Morse code in amateur radio

Here is a small paradox: no country has required Morse code for an amateur radio license in over two decades — the international requirement fell in 2003 — and yet the code is not fading away. On the amateur bands, CW (from "continuous wave", the hams' name for Morse) remains one of the most active modes, and by many community measures interest has been growing: clubs teaching Morse report record membership, and outdoor award programs are full of CW activations.

Why would anyone learn a 180-year-old code voluntarily, on their own time, for fun?

Because it works when nothing else does

CW is brutally efficient. A Morse signal squeezes through a few hundred hertz of bandwidth — a fraction of what voice needs — which means all the transmitter's energy is concentrated into a needle-thin signal. In practice: where a voice contact dissolves into noise, a CW contact still gets through. Operators running QRP (five watts or less, sometimes battery-powered from a mountaintop) routinely span continents. There is a special satisfaction in talking to the other side of the world with less power than a bicycle light.

The gear can be gloriously simple, too. A CW transceiver can be built from a handful of components; some fit in a mint tin. For hikers and minimalists, the code is the lightest radio there is.

Because it is a culture

CW has its own etiquette, its own rhythm, its own humor. Operators recognize each other by their "fist" — the subtle personal timing of hand-sent code, as individual as handwriting. Abbreviations that predate texting by a century (73 for "best regards", CQ for "calling anyone") make conversations fast and oddly intimate across language barriers: two operators who share no spoken language can have a complete conversation in CW.

Modern activity programs have given all this fresh momentum. Parks on the Air (POTA) and Summits on the Air (SOTA) send operators into parks and up mountains with tiny rigs, and CW is a favorite mode there precisely because small signals and small batteries love it. Contests fill weekends; slow-speed nets welcome beginners at a gentle pace.

What about the license?

You need an amateur radio license to transmit — but not to listen, and not to learn. Morse itself is no longer tested anywhere mainstream; in Germany, for instance, there are now three license classes (N, E and A), and the entry class N has made getting started easier than it has been in decades. The sensible order today is: start learning the code by ear now, get licensed in parallel, and by the time your call sign arrives, your ears are ready for the band.

How CW skills are actually built

Everything in our learning guide applies double for the ham bands: real signals come at real speeds, with different pitches, different fists, and noise on top. That is why training with a single perfect tone is not enough — and why hearing-based training with variability built in matters. The classic progression is: single characters, then character groups, then common words and abbreviations, then real contact structures. Head copy — following a conversation without writing anything down — is the long-term prize.

A realistic bar for a first real contact: solid copy around 15–18 WPM character speed. That is weeks of daily practice away, not years. And the community is famously kind to newcomers who send a shaky first CQ.
